When you think retirement haven, Florida or a warm, southern state probably comes to mind. But, why not Iowa?
Less than two months ago, Iowa was ranked the most affordable state for senior citizens entering retirement by Bankrate. Now, Consumer Affairs is ranking Des Moines the fourth-best city for retirement.
“I thought it would be one of the traditional warmer states like Florida, Georgia or Arizona," said Alex Gailey, who did research for Bankrate, "but as I looked into the data used to create the list, it made more sense that Iowa came out on top because the methodology I used put an emphasis on affordability."
The new ranking from Consumer Affairs also took note of Des Moines' affordability, saying it had the lowest cost of living of the top five cities in its list.
